Privacy policy
The short version: we only collect your email address when you join the waitlist. We use it to tell you about Gift Diary, we never sell it, and you can unsubscribe or ask us to delete it at any time.
1. Who we are
Gift Diary is run by Gift Diary (“Gift Diary”, “we”, “us”).
This policy covers this website and the Gift Diary waitlist. For UK data protection law, we are the “controller” of the personal information described here. When the Gift Diary app launches, it will have its own privacy policy explaining how the app handles your information.
2. What we collect
Information you give us
- Your email address, when you join the waitlist.
- Anything you include when you contact us, such as your name and message, if you email us.
Information collected automatically
- Technical information. Like most websites, our hosting provider automatically records basic technical details when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type, device type, the pages you request, the date and time, and the page that referred you (including any campaign tags in the link, such as
utm_source). - Email activity. Our email provider may record whether you open our emails and which links you click, so we can see which emails are useful. You can block this by turning off image loading in your email app.
We don't ask for, and don't want, sensitive information such as health details, and we don't use your information to make automated decisions about you.
3. How we use it
UK law requires us to tell you the “lawful basis” we rely on for each use. Here they are:
| What we do | Information used | Lawful basis (UK) |
|---|---|---|
| Email you launch news, early access invitations and occasional seasonal gift-planning reminders | Email address, email activity | Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time |
| Keep a record of when and how you joined, and of any unsubscribe, so we only email people who want to hear from us | Email address, sign-up date and time | Legal obligation and our legitimate interests in proving consent |
| Reply to your messages | Your contact details and message | Our legitimate interests in answering you |
| Run the website, keep it secure, prevent abuse and understand which links bring visitors | Technical information | Our legitimate interests in running a safe, working website |
| Comply with the law, or establish or defend legal claims | Any of the above, as needed | Legal obligation, or our legitimate interests |
4. Our emails
We only send marketing emails to people who have signed up. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect straight away.
5. Who we share it with
We never sell your personal information, and we never share it with anyone for advertising. We only share it with service providers that help us run Gift Diary. They act on our instructions and may not use your information for their own purposes:
- Kit: stores the waitlist and sends our emails.
- Vercel Inc. (USA): hosts this website and processes the technical information described above.
- Google LLC (USA): supplies the fonts on this website through Google Fonts. When your browser downloads them, Google receives your IP address and browser details.
We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect the rights, safety or property of Gift Diary, our users or others, or as part of a sale, merger or restructuring of our business. If that happens, this policy will continue to apply to your information.
6. International transfers
Some of our service providers are based in, or store data in, the United States and other countries outside the UK. When we transfer personal information out of the UK, we make sure it's protected as UK law requires. We do this by using providers certified under the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, or by relying on the UK's International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum. Contact us if you'd like more detail.
7. How long we keep it
- Waitlist email address: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. If we decide not to launch Gift Diary, we'll delete the waitlist within 12 months of making that decision.
- Unsubscribe records: if you unsubscribe, we keep your email address on a “do not contact” list so we don't email you again by mistake.
- Messages you send us: for up to 2 years after we last hear from you.
- Technical logs: kept by our hosting provider for a short period, usually no longer than 30 days.
8. Cookies and browser storage
This website doesn't use cookies for advertising or tracking, and it doesn't use any analytics service.
The site saves one small setting in your browser's local storage, called gd-locale. It remembers whether you chose UK or US pricing so that the page shows the right version next time. This setting stays on your device and is never sent to us. You can clear it at any time through your browser settings.
If we add analytics or other cookies that aren't strictly necessary, we'll update this policy first. Where the law requires it, we'll also ask for your consent before setting them.
9. Security
We use reputable providers, encrypted connections (HTTPS), and access controls to protect your information. We limit access to people who need it. No method of storing or sending information online is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect yours. If a breach affects your information, we'll tell you and the regulator where the law requires it.
10. Your rights in the UK
Under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you and get a copy of it.
- Correct information that's wrong or incomplete.
- Delete your information.
- Restrict how we use your information.
- Object to how we use your information, including the absolute right to object to direct marketing.
- Move your information to another service (data portability).
- Withdraw consent at any time. This doesn't affect anything we did before you withdrew it.
To use any of these rights, email info@giftdiary.com. We'll reply within one month. There's usually no charge.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please talk to us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.
11. Your rights in the US
Wherever you live in the US, you can ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy;
- correct it;
- delete it; and
- stop sending you marketing emails.
To make a request, email info@giftdiary.com. We may need to confirm your identity first, usually by replying from the email address you signed up with. You can also use an authorized agent to make a request for you. If we turn down a request, we'll explain why, and where your state's law gives you the right to appeal, you can reply to ask us to reconsider.
We won't treat you differently for using any of your privacy rights.
Sale, sharing and targeted advertising
We don't sell personal information, we don't “share” it for cross-context behavioral advertising (as California law uses that term), and we don't use it for targeted advertising. We haven't done so in the last 12 months.
California
In the last 12 months, we've collected these categories of personal information: identifiers (email address and IP address) and internet or network activity (the technical information and email activity described in section 2). We collect them from you and your device, for the purposes listed in section 3, and we disclose them only to the service providers listed in section 5. We don't collect sensitive personal information.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
This website doesn't track you across other websites, so it works the same way whatever Do Not Track setting you use. Because we don't sell or share personal information, there's nothing to opt out of. If we ever start, we'll treat a Global Privacy Control signal as an opt-out request.
12. Children
Gift Diary is for adults planning gifts. This website and the waitlist aren't aimed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you think a child has signed up, contact us and we'll delete their information.
13. Changes to this policy
We'll update this policy when how we handle personal information changes, for example when the app launches. We'll change the “last updated” date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll email people on the waitlist before it takes effect.
